  Research on Terminalia Arjuna

  • Cardio protective: Many researches have been proved it's effect on cardiac muscles. It strengthens them and owing to it's Hypocholesterolaemic effect, its very useful in case of angina, myocardial infarction etc. Its one of the best remedies for a heart patient to reduce further chances of heart attack.

  • Hypocholesterolaemic & Hepatoprotective: Terminalia arjuna possesses hypocholesterolaemic effects. In cases of cirrhosis of the liver, the bark of Terminalia Arjuna has a tonic effect and induces a drug-dependent decrease in heart beat and blood pressure.

  • Antibacterial: Antibacterial activity of crude drug from the tree bark of T. arjuna was tested against bacteria using the hole-plate diffusion method with concentrations of 5-25 mg/ml. The effective results of bacterial activity were confirmed by the dilution method (1.25-20 mg/ml) in MIC. The above results were supported by phytochemical analysis. Specific activity against pathogenic Bacterium, Bacillus subtilis and Staphyloccus aureus confirm the traditional usage of bark of T.arjuna.

  •   Research on Terminalia Belerica

  • Stone formation: Frawley and Lad mention that Vibhitaki is useful in the treatment of cholelithiasis and urinary lithiasis, liquefying and expelling the stones.

  • Vibhitaki is a stimulating astringent and has a wide application in any condition of atony, prolapse and relaxation of the mucosa. For coughs, sore throats, laryngitis and dyspepsia the powder may be taken with honey.

  • Hepatoprotective: Compound I isolated from fraction TB5 of Terminalia belerica and finally identified as 3,4,5-trihydroxy benzoic acid (Gallic acid) was evaluated for its hepatoprotective activity against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) - induced physiological and biochemical alterations in the liver

  • Anti-carcinogenic: An extract of Terminalia belerica showed significant inhibitory activity on human immunodeficiency virus-1 reverse transcriptase, with IC50 < or = 50 micrograms/ml

  • Hypercholesterolaemia and atherosclerosis were induced experimentally in rabbits by cholesterol feeding.

  • Antimutagenic: Two polyphenolic fractions isolated from T. belerica were significantly effective against mutagenic effects in Salmonella typhimurium. Interaction of the polyphenols with S9 proteins may be the probable cause of the inhibitory effect

  •   Research on Terminalia Chebula

  • Antibacterial: An aqueous extract from Terminalia chebula strongly inhibited the growth, sucrose induced adhereence and glucan induced aggregation of Streptococcus mutans. "Mouth rinsing with a 10% solution of the extract inhibited the salivary bacterial count and salivary glycolysis"

  • Antifungal: A water extract of Terminalia chebula was found to have an antifungal activity.

  • Antiviral: A hot water extract of Terminalia chebula inhibited replication of human cytomegalovirus and murine cytomegalovirus in vitro and in vivo in immunosuppressed cyclosporine-treated mice. Terminalia chebula is reported to have antiherpes simplex virus type 1 activity. Terminalia chebula showed a significant inhibitory activity on the effects on human immunodeficiency virus-1 reverse transcriptase.

  • Anticarcinogenic: A tannin fraction from the dried fruit pulp of Terminalia chebula is reported to have antimutagenic activity in vitro. A methanol extract of Terminalia chebula is reported to have had a high potential for inhibiting the growth of leukemia cells, attributed to arjunglucoside I and arjungenin .

  • Cardiovascular: Terminalia chebula is reported to significantly reduce serum cholesterol, aortic sudanophilia and the cholesterol contents of the liver and aorta in cholesterol-fed rabbits .

  • Digestive: Terminalia chebula is reported to improve the secretory status of Brunner's glands involved in the protection against duodenal ulcer (Nadar and Pillai 1989).
